Beginning Pysanky April 7th, 2024 - 2PM to 5PM This course offers an introduction to the traditional Ukrainian art of pysanky, or Ukrainian/Carpatho-Rusyn egg decorating. Students will learn the history, symbolism, and techniques of pysanky, as well as gain practical skills in creating their own beautiful designs. This course runs for approximately three hours – but may run a bit longer. Materials Given to Students: • 2 Blown Chicken eggs • Pencil • Beeswax – You will have enough beeswax to create many more pysanky. • Delrin Kistka (wax stylus) • Dyes (traditional and modern pysanky dyes included) – I will provide the dyes during the class. You will also be given dyes to take home to create many more pysanky. • Candle • Paper towels • Egg carton to take your creations home • 2 Pysanky beginning design sheets, a symbols sheet, written instructions on the entire beginning process. Course Outline: • Overview of pysanky history and cultural significance • Introduction to common pysanky motifs and symbolism • Explanation and demonstration of tools and materials • Choosing eggs – Blowing out eggs – Finding the top center • Practice using kistka and wax on practice eggs • Demonstration of basic techniques: wax application, dyeing, and color layering • Hands-on practice creating simple designs using time honored ways to divide an egg. • Independent work time to create a final pysanky. • One-on-one guidance from the instructor • Finishing and sealing completed pysanky • Advanced techniques: etching, scratching, resin sealing, and embellishments WILL NOT BE TAUGHT.
